Launch of “Forget Me Not” a short film written by Makanaka Mavengere: A Milestone for the #SSADZA Fund

The vibrant tapestry of Zimbabwe’s arts scene has been invigorated by the launch of the #SSADZA Fund, aimed at enhancing and showcasing the best of Zimbabwean creativity. This initiative has come to fruition with the release of the short film Forget Me Not. This moving narrative represents a pivotal moment, not just for its storyteller, director, and cast, but also for the support that brought it to life. Writer Makanaka Mavengere is the first creative in Zimbabwe to be awarded funding from the Swiss Support to Arts Development in Zimbabwe (SSADZA) Fund Open Call, launched in November 2024, which is committed to empowering local artists and promoting cultural diversity. On the 9th of July, 2025, Maka Naka Films premiered the short film “Forget Me Not” at Alliance Française de Harare and attracted a full house!

Film Synopsis: Forget Me Not tells the heart-wrenching story of a man grappling with dementia, who finds solace in vivid memories of his late first wife. As the lines between past and present blur, his current wife struggles with the emotional fallout, feeling heartbroken and disconnected. The film explores the bittersweet nature of love and loss, highlighting the challenges faced by families dealing with dementia juxtaposed with cultural and religious beliefs of extended family that ultimately harm the couple.

Themes of Love and Memory

At its core, Forget Me Not delves into the enduring power of love and the profound impact of memory on identity and relationships. It sheds light on dementia within the Zimbabwean and broader African context, challenging common misconceptions often tied to madness or witchcraft. The film encourages viewers to cherish the fragile beauty of life’s fleeting moments, reminding us of the importance of empathy and understanding in the face of life’s challenges.

A Call for Awareness

Mavengere’s vision extends beyond storytelling; it serves as a call to action for society to confront and redefine the narratives surrounding mental health. By bringing these themes to the forefront, Forget Me Not not only entertains but also educates, fostering a deeper understanding of the complexities associated with dementia.

Directed by 6-time national and continental award-winning Charlene Mangweni-Furusa, Forget Me Not features a vibrant and talented cast, including Charity Dlodlo, known for her role as Mai Madziva in Studio 263, and Steven Chigorimbo, a legendary actor, producer, and director with credits in international films like Slavers and The Lost City of Gold. From a cinematographic standpoint, Forget Me Not does not disappoint, a testament to Mangweni-Furusa and her production team.

A New Era for Zimbabwean Artists

The SSADZA Fund aims to offer financial support for innovative projects that foster artistic excellence and contribute to sustainable development in Zimbabwe’s arts sector. By backing initiatives like Forget Me Not, the fund is actively working to dismantle barriers and create opportunities for Zimbabwean artists to share their unique perspectives. This support is essential in a landscape where funding for the arts is increasingly scarce. The release of Forget Me Not represents a glimmer of hope for resource-constrained Zimbabwean cinema and underscores the positive impact of artistic expression when bolstered by initiatives like the #SSADZA Fund.

As we celebrate Mavengere’s achievement, we anticipate how the film will connect with audiences and inspire future generations of artists in Zimbabwe, while also providing support to families facing mental health challenges like dementia.
